Workflow from project sponsor's perspective

The project sponsor specifies the business-related basis of the project in the Business case, which must be kept updated throughout the project.

The Project charter describes the project arena and defines the project objectives, limits and conditions. It serves as a confirmation that the project manager and the project sponsor agree on these things. The project charter must be updated as needed.

The gates are future-oriented decision points where the business rational of the project is tested. This is when the decision is made whether or not the next phase should be started. The gates let the project sponsor think, analyze and test the project.
