The advantage of certification according to an international standard is that it can serve as a guarantee of skills in the project field. The Project Management Institute (PMI) is based in the USA and has been certifying project managers for nearly 20 years. Currently over 50,000 people have been certified according to this standard and earned the title of Project Management Professionals.
In 2002, a new certification was implemented in Sweden, developed by the International Project Management Association (IPMA). The IPMA is an umbrella organization representing a range of European national project management organizations.
