Even the best-prepared project will be subject to change. Unexpected and unforeseen incidents such as resource shortages, misjudgments or other pitfalls may alter the original scenario. Therefore, every project must be equipped with its own control system. Such systems normally include a number of tools and routines for detection and correction. When the project is complex or strategically important, more comprehensive project audits should be performed.

Project audits are often made during the realization phase in order to confirm that the project is being handled correctly and developing in the right direction. When the audits are carried out by an external and impartial expert the risk of blindness to defects in one's own work is reduced. This will raise security and confidence for both the customer and the participants in the project organization.
